Latest News ...

Summer Volunteer Week is July 24-31, 2010 in Manchester, KY.

The 2010 Summer Volunteer Week application is available.  All volunteers need to provide their own transportation to our gathering place near Cincinnati, OH.  From there we travel as a group to Manchester.  The focus of this week will be home improvement projects, this might include yardwork, painting, home repairs, etc.    This is an action packed week with full days and plenty of summer heat.  This week tends to be more physically demanding and should be a consideration for some volunteers.

Fall Sewing Week is September 18-24, 2010 in Vanceburg, KY.

There are a variety of ways you can volunteer for this week.  You can participate in the actual sewing week in Vanceburg.  Click here  for an application.  If you can't attend in person, there will be opportunities to collect fabric and supply donations.  We will also need people to cut fabric and assemble sewing kits.

If you don't sew, but would like a gentler volunteer experience, this is still the week for you.  There are a variety of service projects available in Lewis County (Food & Clothing Pantry, Nursing Home Visits, Adult Day Center activities, etc) that can use the help of our volunteers.  Watch for more details in late Spring.

The show will be held on May 22, 2010 at the Lewis County High School from 10:00am to 2:00pm.  Quilt shop vendors will be on hand with a wide variety of quilting and sewing accessories for sale.  WSA is planning to see about getting a vendor table at the show to help spread the word about The Fall Sewing Week.  Match for more to come.

Annual Board of Director Meeting

Our Annual Board of Director Meeting took place Saturday October 3, 2009 at 3:00pm EST.  We will gathered in Sylvania, Ohio and Watertown, MA, and connected with Skype.

We bid farewell to Barbara Stygles (One of our Founding Mothers).  While she will continue to be active with WSA, she has resigned from our Board of Directors to pursue other interests.  Anita Tokos also leaves our Board this year.  We welcome Diana Perney and Sally Arnold as new members of our Board.

We will host two volunteer opportunities in 2010, A Summer Volunteer Week in July and the Fall Sewing Week in September.  Watch our website and Facebook for more details.

We will offer of WSA Scholarship in 2010.  The 2010 Application is under development and will be posted on our website once it is available.  We will follow the same format as prior years.

Fall Sewing Week Update

WSA partnered with The University of KY Cooperative Extension - Lewis County for a new volunteer opportunity during September 19-25, 2009 in Vanceburg, KY.   The project was a great success.

WSA and local volunteers gathered for 2 1/2 days of sewing beginning on Monday 9/21/2009.  We had 14 people working over the days with an average of 8-10 volunteers at any one time.  It proved to be a time of good fellowship and camaraderie as we worked to complete the promised items for The Golden Living Center in Vanceburg.

We completed 210 pillowcases (2 for each resident - 1 for their bed and one for the laundry), 30 wheelchair caddies, 10 walker caddies, 10 bedside saddlebags and 10 clothing protectors.

Kentucky Quilts & Their Makers

About this Book:
Quilting was one of the few forms of creative expression open to past generations of women. Within the acceptable confines of making something "useful" these women stitched rather than penned their stories.
